Christiane Sauer is architect and professor for material and design. Her focus lies on innovative material applications in an architectural or spatial context. She is active in research, teaching and practice alike. By combining design with recent technology she aims at creating forward-looking and sustainable material concepts in the field of textile structures, active materials and functional surfaces.
Since 2013 she is appointed professor at the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin, since 2017 prorector for networks and knowledge transfer. In 2012 she taught as guest professor for design at Burg Giebichenstein / Halle, 2011 she had an endowed professorship for Sustainability at Cornell University, Ithaca / NY. Formerly she woked as a research assistant at the Berlin University of the Arts and in 2001 she founded formade – studio for architecture and materials, as well as 2009 LülingSauerArchitekten in Berlin. She is co-founder of online platform Architonic and worked previously for renowned international architecture firms such as OMA / Rotterdam or FACE Design NYC.
As a lecturer, consultant, moderator and author she regularly works nationally and internationally, e.g. for SCI-Arc Los Angeles, md magazine, DETAIL research, Forschungsinitiative Zukunft Bau. She is a member of the BDA and the Berlin Chamber of Architects. Since 2018 she is involved as Principal Investigator and board member in the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity. Image Space Material” lead by Humboldt University of Berlin.
